Forty Cottage is a Grade II Listed cottage which was significantly upgraded in 1993/94 when a significant sum was spent refurbishing the Listed building, replacing weathered timbers, rebuilding the chimney, new roof timbers and slates, adding a floating floor to the second storey encapsulating the ancient timbers and making the house warmer. Insulating the brick infill panels, adding a wood burning stove. Within the grounds is a well which has been capped off, but remains. There a single storey brick built workshop, last used as a Glass blowing studio by the late owner who was fascinated with Forty Cottage, and was an eminent glass sculptor.

 

SO 43 NW Madley CP – Cottage probably 15th & 16th Century with later alterations. Timber frame with brick infill, weatherboards, sandstone rubble, Welsh slate roof and external sandstone end stack with brick shalf. Two structural bays aligned roughly east / west. Two storeys. North elevation has four windows, 2 and 4 pane C20 casements and sashes in weather boarded upper storey with two contemporary 2 light casements in exposed timber framing of ground floor; projecting upper storey is supported on bressummer with straight cut chamfer-stops resting on three curved braces rising forward from main wall-posts; rear glazed late C20 door. Interior chamfered ceiling beams. Extract from the Royal Commission for Historical Documents.

 

DIRECTIONS

The cottage is 6.9 miles from Hereford. Proceed through Madley and take a left hand turn signposted Madley Plants. The Property is down the left hand fork in the lane, and has immediate access onto Public footpaths. Viewing is strictly by prior appointment.
